Pediatric Nurse Practitioner & Pediatric Mental Health Specialist

As a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, I’ve always believed that caring for a child means caring for the whole child, not just treating illness when it occurs. Children’s physical health, emotional well-being, behavior, school performance, relationships, and family environment are all connected. When one area is struggling, it often affects the others.
That’s why I am excited to share that I recently earned my Pediatric Mental Health Specialist (PMHS) certification. This additional training expands the comprehensive care I provide to children, teens, and families at the Pillar Health Racine Clinic and Pillar Health Kenosha Clinic.
The need for pediatric mental health support has never been greater. Families today are navigating challenges that can affect children’s emotional well-being, including academic pressures, social media, anxiety, behavioral concerns, sleep difficulties, and major life transitions. As healthcare providers, we have an important opportunity to recognize these concerns early and help children receive the support they need.
When Is It Time to Seek Additional Support?
One of the most common questions I hear from parents is, “How do I know if what my child is experiencing is typical, or if I should be concerned?”
Every child experiences stress, frustration, sadness, and worry from time to time. However, when emotional or behavioral challenges begin affecting daily life, school performance, friendships, or family relationships, it may be time to reach out for support.
Parents may want to schedule an appointment if their child is:
- Frequently anxious, worried, or overwhelmed
- Having trouble focusing or sitting still
- Struggling with behavior at home or school
- Having difficulty sleeping
- Experiencing noticeable changes in mood or energy levels
- Withdrawing from friends or activities they once enjoyed
- Having trouble managing emotions or frequent outbursts
Many parents worry they need to wait until a problem becomes severe before seeking help. In reality, early support often leads to better outcomes and can help prevent concerns from becoming more difficult over time.
Mental Health Can Affect School Success
As children prepare for a new school year, emotional health plays a major role in academic success.
Mental health concerns may sometimes appear as:
- Difficulty concentrating
- Declining grades
- Frequent absences or school avoidance
- Challenges with peer relationships
- Trouble regulating emotions in the classroom
- Physical symptoms such as headaches, stomachaches, or sleep problems without a clear medical cause
These concerns do not mean a child is failing or that a parent has done something wrong. They simply signal that additional support may be beneficial.
What Families Can Expect
My goal is to create a welcoming environment where children and families feel heard, respected, and supported.
At Pillar Health, we take a family-centered approach that focuses on both physical and emotional health. We work with families to understand their concerns, develop personalized care plans, and connect them with additional resources when appropriate. We can also collaborate with schools when desired and beneficial to support a child’s success across settings.
Whether a child needs routine preventive care, support managing anxiety, evaluation for ADHD, assistance with behavioral concerns, or help navigating emotional challenges, families deserve compassionate care that meets them where they are.
Comprehensive Pediatric Services
In addition to pediatric mental health support, I provide a full range of pediatric primary care services, including:
- Well-child visits
- Acute sick visits
- Developmental screenings
- Sports physicals
- Anxiety support
- ADHD evaluation and management
- Depression support
- Behavioral health concerns
- Sleep-related concerns
By integrating primary care and mental health support, we can better address the needs of the whole child and provide more coordinated care for families.
Investing in Our Children’s Future
I firmly believe that investing in the physical and mental health of today’s children strengthens our entire community for generations to come.
One of the reasons I am proud to be part of Pillar Health is our commitment to community partnerships, school outreach, and making healthcare accessible to families throughout Racine, Kenosha, and Southeast Wisconsin.
Every child deserves the opportunity to grow, thrive, and reach their full potential. Supporting children’s mental health is an important part of making that happen.
