As summer winds down, many families begin thinking about school supplies, backpacks, and class schedules. While those are all important, one of the best ways to set your child up for a successful school year is by re-establishing healthy daily routines before the first day of school.

Children thrive on consistency. After months of later bedtimes, relaxed schedules, and spontaneous summer fun, jumping back into a structured school routine overnight can be difficult for both kids and parents. The good news is that a few simple changes made in the weeks leading up to school can make the transition much smoother.

Start Adjusting Schedules Early

Rather than waiting until the night before school starts, begin shifting your child’s schedule about two weeks before the first day of school.

Gradually moving bedtime and wake-up time earlier by 15 to 30 minutes every few days gives your child’s body time to adjust naturally. This gradual approach helps reduce morning struggles and makes it easier for children to feel rested when school begins.

Consistency is key. Whenever possible, try to keep the same bedtime and wake-up time every day, including weekends.

Create a Calm Bedtime Routine

A predictable bedtime routine signals to your child’s brain that it’s time to slow down and prepare for sleep. The routine doesn’t have to be elaborate, but it should be consistent.

A healthy bedtime routine may include:

  • Taking a bath or shower
  • Putting on pajamas
  • Brushing teeth
  • Reading together
  • Listening to calming music
  • Talking about the day’s highlights

Repeating these activities in the same order each evening helps children feel secure while promoting healthy sleep habits.

Limit Screens Before Bed

One of the biggest challenges to healthy sleep today is screen time.

The light from phones, tablets, televisions, and gaming devices can make it harder for children to fall asleep and stay asleep. Whenever possible, turn off screens one to two hours before bedtime.

Instead, encourage relaxing activities like:

  • Reading
  • Coloring
  • Drawing
  • Puzzles
  • Quiet family conversations

These screen-free moments not only improve sleep but also create valuable opportunities for family connection and help children build healthy self-regulation skills.

Practice the School Morning

Mornings can be one of the most stressful parts of the school year—especially after a relaxed summer schedule.

A few days before school starts, consider doing a “practice morning.” Have everyone wake up at the school-year time and go through the normal routine:

  • Get dressed
  • Eat breakfast
  • Brush teeth
  • Pack backpacks
  • Leave the house on schedule

Practicing ahead of time helps identify anything that needs to be adjusted and reduces anxiety on the first day of school.

Why Routines Matter

Children often feel more confident when they know what to expect. Predictable routines provide a sense of security while supporting healthy sleep, improved focus, emotional regulation, and overall well-being.

By making small adjustments before school starts, families can avoid the stress of trying to change everything overnight and instead begin the school year feeling prepared and confident.

Don’t Forget Your Child’s Well-Child Visit

Back-to-school season is also the perfect time to schedule your child’s annual well-child visit.

These appointments allow your healthcare provider to:

  • Monitor your child’s growth and development
  • Update immunizations
  • Complete sports physicals
  • Address any health concerns before school begins
  • Provide guidance tailored to your child’s age and developmental stage

Establishing regular care with a trusted pediatric healthcare provider helps ensure your child receives the preventive care and support they need from infancy through the teen years.
