For families across Kenosha County, protecting a child’s smile can now be as convenient as sending them to school.

Throughout the 2026-2027 school year, Pillar Health’s Seal-A-Smile team will visit 32 schools throughout Kenosha County, bringing preventive dental services, dental sealants and oral health education directly to students.

The school-based program helps make important preventive dental care more accessible to children by providing services in a familiar, convenient environment during the school day. Seal-A-Smile is not a free program for all students. Services are provided at no cost only when the treatment is not a covered benefit under the student’s insurance or when the student does not have insurance.

What Is Wisconsin Seal-A-Smile?

Wisconsin Seal-A-Smile is a school-based dental sealant program designed to improve access to preventive oral health care for children.

Through Pillar Health and Kenosha Community Health Center, the program brings trained dental professionals directly into participating schools throughout Kenosha County. This approach helps reduce barriers that can make accessing preventive dental care more difficult for some families, including transportation, scheduling and time away from work or school.

Rather than waiting for children to develop painful dental problems, Seal-A-Smile focuses on prevention and education.

Dental sealants are thin protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of permanent back teeth, or molars.

The grooves in these teeth can easily trap food particles and bacteria and can be difficult for children to clean thoroughly with a toothbrush. Sealants create an added layer of protection over these vulnerable surfaces.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, dental sealants can prevent 80% of cavities in the back teeth, where 9 in 10 cavities occur.

Preventing cavities is about more than protecting a child’s teeth. Oral health can affect a student’s comfort, nutrition, concentration, school attendance and overall well-being. By bringing preventive dental services into schools, Seal-A-Smile gives Kenosha County families another resource for helping children establish healthy habits early.

Pillar Health dental hygienists provide students with age-appropriate oral health education designed to help them understand why taking care of their teeth matters and what they can do at home to maintain a healthy smile.

Students learn about:

  • The purpose and benefits of dental sealants in preventing cavities
  • How sealants protect permanent molars, where many childhood cavities occur
  • Why brushing teeth at least twice each day is important
  • The importance of flossing every evening to help maintain healthy teeth and gums
  • The role everyday oral hygiene plays in preventing dental problems

Giving students this information helps reinforce healthy habits that can continue long after the Seal-A-Smile team leaves their school.
