Summer is a great time for kids to relax, stay up a little later, and enjoy a more flexible schedule. But as the first day of school approaches, getting back into a consistent routine can make the transition much easier. Ideally, families should slowly begin adjusting schedules around two weeks before school starts.
Reset the Bedtime Routine
A consistent bedtime is one of the most important parts of preparing for school. Start moving bedtime and wake-up time earlier gradually, about 15-30 minutes every few days, until your child is on their school schedule. Aim for the same bedtime and wake-up time each day, including weekends when possible.
Create a predictable, calming nighttime routine. Regular activities might include taking a bath or shower, putting on pajamas, brushing teeth, reading together, listening to quiet music, or talking about the day. Keeping the routine consistent helps signal to your child that it is time to wind down and get ready for sleep.
Put Screens Away
Screens can make it harder for children to settle down for sleep. Try to limit phones, tablets, video games, and television for 1-2 hours before bedtime. Instead, encourage calm activities such as reading, drawing, puzzles, coloring, or simply spending time together as a family. This promotes healthy bonding time, self-regulation, and more restful sleep.
Practice the Morning Routine
Don’t forget about the mornings! Try a trial morning or two where you practice getting dressed, eating breakfast, packing a backpack, and leaving the house on time. This will help prepare everyone in the home for what is to come on that first day back.
A gradual return to a predictable routine can help children feel more rested, prepared, and confident when the first day of school arrives. Starting early gives the whole family time to adjust- without the stress of trying to change everything the night before school starts!
