Each year, breast cancer impacts millions of lives. In the U.S. alone, 316,950 women are expected to be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in 2025, along with 59,080 cases of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). Men are also affected, with about 2,800 new diagnoses projected this year. There are more than 4 million breast cancer survivors living in the U.S., serving as a powerful reminder that early detection and access to care make a difference.
Unfortunately, breast cancer is still expected to claim the lives of 42,170 women and 510 men in 2025. That makes prevention, early detection, and year-round vigilance critical.
Why Early Detection Matters
Death rates from breast cancer have been declining, but progress has slowed to about 1% improvement per year. And disparities remain troubling. Black women are about 38% more likely to die from breast cancer than White women, despite having slightly lower overall incidence. Factors include differences in access to screening, later-stage diagnoses, tumor biology, and socioeconomic barriers.
These statistics underscore the importance of proactive care: scheduling mammograms, knowing your risk factors, and talking to your healthcare provider.
Mammogram Guidelines
- Ages 40–44: Optional yearly mammograms.
- Ages 45–54: Annual mammograms recommended.
- Ages 55+: Every two years, or continue yearly depending on risk factors.
In addition, self-exams should begin in your 20s. Being familiar with your body can help you spot changes such as lumps, swelling, or skin differences—early signs that should be checked immediately.
