January is nationally recognized as Blood Donor Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the critical and ongoing need for blood donation.
According ot the American Red Cross, across the United States, someone requires blood every two seconds. Here in Wisconsin, demand continues to outpace supply, making community-driven blood drives more important than ever.
Blood is essential for surgeries, cancer treatments, trauma care, chronic illness management, and emergency medicine. Yet blood cannot be manufactured. It relies entirely on volunteer donors. Versiti Blood Center of Wisconsin and other local blood centers regularly report shortages, with some blood types dropping below a one-day supply. Only a small percentage of eligible donors actually give nationwide, and historically, only about 3 percent of eligible Wisconsinites donate.
This month serves as a reminder that every donation counts. A single blood donation can save up to three lives. The process is straightforward, safe, and highly impactful. Most whole blood donations take under an hour, and donors who meet age and weight guidelines can give every 56 days.
Give the Gift of Life at Our Upcoming Blood Drive

Why January Donations Matter in Wisconsin
Winter is historically one of the hardest seasons for maintaining an adequate blood supply. Weather disruptions, seasonal illnesses, holidays, and school breaks all contribute to low donor turnout. Meanwhile, patient needs remain constant.
Wisconsin hospitals rely heavily on the stability of local donors. These donations support emergency departments, cancer centers, neonatal units, and trauma cases throughout the state. When regional inventory falls, it places added strain on rural and urban health systems alike.
Every donor in January and throughout the year plays a role in preventing shortages. If you have never donated before, this is an ideal time to start. If you’re already a donor, thank you — and consider making January the month you commit to an annual or recurring donation schedule.
