Diabetes and Well-Being: The 2025 National Focus

November marks National Diabetes Month in the United States, a time to raise awareness about diabetes prevention, management, and support. On the global stage, World Diabetes Day is recognized on November 14, led by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF). The IDF’s official theme for 2024–2026 no es “Diabetes and Well-Being,” which emphasizes improving quality of life for people living with diabetes and ensuring access to the care, resources, and support needed to thrive.

At Pillar Health and KCHC, we align with this message by focusing on total well-being—helping our patients care for both their physical and emotional health while managing or preventing diabetes.

Understanding Diabetes: Your Body’s Energy Balance

Your body depends on sugar (glucose) from food to create energy. The hormone insulin acts like a key that helps your body’s cells absorb and use that glucose. When diabetes develops, the body either doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t use it effectively, causing blood sugar levels to rise and putting long-term strain on the heart, kidneys, eyes, and nerves.

The Three Main Types of Diabetes:

Type 1 Diabetes occurs when the body stops making insulin. People with Type 1 must take insulin daily, either through injections or a pump. This form can appear at any age but is often diagnosed in childhood.

Type 2 Diabetes occurs when the body still makes insulin but doesn’t use it well. It is the most common type of diabetes and is often linked to weight, inactivity, or genetics. Healthy eating, physical activity, and sometimes medication can help manage it.

Gestational Diabetes develops during pregnancy and typically resolves afterward, but it increases the mother’s risk of developing Type 2 diabetes later in life.

The Latest Diabetes Trends in 2025

Según la International Diabetes Federation (IDF), 38 million U.S. adults live with diabetes, roughly 1 in 9 Americans. Nearly 98 million adults have prediabetes, putting them at high risk of developing diabetes in the coming years. Globally, more than 11% of adults ages 20–79 have diabetes, and numbers continue to rise each year. Diabetes remains among the top 10 causes of death in the United States, yet many cases are preventable or manageable with early detection and lifestyle changes.

Know Your Risk and Take Action

You may be at higher risk for Type 2 diabetes if you are 35 or older, are overweight or obese, have a family history of diabetes, are African American, American Indian, Asian American, Hispanic or Latino, or Pacific Islander, have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or prediabetes, or live a sedentary lifestyle.

The Diabetes ABCs: Staying on Track

Managing diabetes and supporting your well-being starts with understanding your ABCs.

A – A1C: This blood test measures your average blood sugar over the past three months.
B – Blood Pressure: Keeping it in a healthy range reduces stress on your heart and kidneys.
C – Cholesterol: Managing cholesterol helps lower the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Ask your healthcare team about your personal ABC goals and how to meet them. Learn more about diabetes management from the NIDDK.

Supporting Total
Well-Being

Beyond blood sugar levels, here’s how to nurture overall well-being:

Medication and Monitoring: Consistency Counts

Taking medications and checking blood glucose regularly are critical to keeping blood sugar in check and staying well. If you’re struggling with costs, timing, or side effects, reach out for help. Your care team can connect you with assistance programs, care coordination, or medication counseling to help you stay on track.

A Healthy Weight for a Healthier Tomorrow

Your personal commitment to weight loss is a top priority. Even modest weight loss, about 5–7% of your starting weight, can lower the risk of Type 2 diabetes or improve control if you already have it. Our care teams can help set realistic goals and connect you to nutrition and exercise resources.
