May is High Blood Pressure Awareness Month—a great time to learn why blood pressure matters and how to keep it in a healthy range.
At Pillar Health and Kenosha Community Health Center, we’re proud to serve Southeast Wisconsin, helping our community stay heart-healthy all year long.
What Is Blood Pressure?
Think of your blood vessels like garden hoses. Blood pressure is the force of your blood pushing against the walls of those vessels as your heart pumps. Doctors measure it using two numbers:
- Top number (systolic): Pressure when your heart beats
- Bottom number (diastolic): Pressure when your heart rests
A normal blood pressure reading is usually around 120/80 mmHg.
Why Is Blood Pressure Important?
High blood pressure—also called hypertension—is known as the “silent killer” because you often don’t feel sick even when your numbers are too high. But over time, it can quietly cause serious problems like heart disease, strokes, or kidney issues. That’s why it’s so important to check your blood pressure regularly and keep it in the normal range.
